How much is your thinking holding you back? (Part 5)

And then today the subject is mission, the last of the three pillars that form the foundation on how we think and how we drive ourselves. Simply put, our mission is all about how we do it, mission is vehicle we want to use to achieve our vision. The vehicle can be our career, our business, our hobbies, our family, or anything that allows us to achieve our vision. A mission typically is expressed in a written statement and the best mission tends to be defined in a: Simple statement that summarises how we want to achieve our vision It is easy to read and remember; and It is something that you like and love doing. So, recapping the three pillars: With the vision, we get direction on where to go; With values, we set the rules of the game, our lives and the standards on how we want to live. And mission is how we do achieve it. How much is your thinking holding you back? (Part 4)

Continuing with this week theme, our next item relates to our values. Values are those important feeling we have that we are willing to fight for. In a simpler term, our values are the rules we want to live by and the standards we set for ourselves. Simple. That said, there are a few things we must be aware to ensure our values do not get in our way… Let me explain. First write down all the values that are important to you. As many as relevant to you (rule of thumb is about ten, then again, as many or as few as you like). Then follow these steps: Are all values congruent with each other? Are they moving you the same direction? Sometimes, we may have values that undo other values. For example, in some cultures, money is related to bad people (this would be one value), so a person in this culture wanting to build wealth (another value) would have a conflict between the two. Overtime, this individual would likely be building wealth and losing it like a yo-yo. Are all the values moving you toward you vision and your purpose? For example, an individual could have a value that helps him/her to avoid being hungry (moving away from hunger). This can also lead to not saving money and expending too much in food. How much is your thinking holding you back? (Part 3)

JamesB asked a very valid question from yesterday’s post and I will try to simplify how you can work out your life vision. You can do the following exercise as a starting point. Some will get it quickly, and others (like myself) may take longer. The important thing is to start working in defining your own vision and to take as long as it takes. Keep working on it until you get it (discipline yourself to consistently persevere until you get it). Imagine you are 1,000 years old (yes, three zeros). For sake of this exercise, imagine you have achieved everything you wanted in life (personal, business, career, wealth, health, etc). You are gathered with your friends and close relatives to celebrate your birthday and they ask you to tell them what the five accomplishments you have achieved that you are the MOST proud of doing. The answer to the above exercise will give you a good indicator of what your vision and your purpose in life are.

Continuing from yesterday’s post, today I will start with one of the three pillars of how we think, so then you can change what needs to be changed (if any). The three pillars are vision, mission and values. As there are many interpretations of what they mean, I will provide a short description and summarise how each affects the way each one of us think. Vision: It is basically what we want to do in life. Our purpose. What we want to accomplish in life. The vision provides us with direction on what we choose to do and how we do them. When we have our vision is like setting the GPS device in your car: It keeps you true to your destination regardless of any obstacle, de-tours and road closures you may encounter in our way. It also allow us to make better decisions. A person without a vision is like a dog chasing rabbits in the field: When you see a rabbit in a field, you will find many. When a dog sees a rabbit, it starts chasing the rabbit, sees another before catching the first and then start chasing the second rabbit, does the same with the third and the fourth… At the end of the day, the poor dog is dead tire and caught no rabbit – READ: has accomplish nothing. The clearer your vision is the better it will guide you in life.

How much is your thinking holding you back?

Today, I had a nice and very interesting conversation with a stranger about how our thinking impact our lives in all aspects and this will be my posting theme for this week. To get the ball rolling, I will use a quotation which I got in one of a training class (unable to remember the name of the author): “Who we are, and how we see the world, and how we think the world sees us, is significant in terms of the results we get.” How we perceive ourselves and how we perceive the world around us will determine what we think we can do and how to do it. Look at the image in this post: same bottle, different colour of light. Our way of thinking will put a colour on what we look at, how we perceive things. One way to improve any aspect of our life, or all of it, is to update the way we think, the way we see the world and the way we see ourselves.
