Businesses often want their employees to work a very well and detailed set of parameters and sometimes even rigid and restrictive. In addition, they have the tendency to drop feed the minimum level of information needed to do the task at hand. Businesses like this could improve overall performance by practicing the teaching of this Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Show him how to catch fish, and you will feed him for a lifetime.” In this context, all that businesses need to do is focus on what needs be accomplish, the outcome complying only with the minimum set of parameters. Likewise, the level of information provided should be focus on making available the maximum possible amount relevant to the task, including the role and context that the task at hand will play in the overall medium and long term business plan. This approach with the information will allow the employee to think on the long term and take a more strategic approach on the work being done, instead of a tactical solution.
We all know that we can have a very fast car, powerful engine and everything else to make it the best car. However, without a great driver and a clear destination, the car can hardly go anywhere at the best speed. The funny thing is that many business do have great employees, great plans, great products, great many things and then have a leader without a clear purpose and vision of what the business is all about and think he/she is more important that everyone else in the business…
Many Businesses encourage hard work, which is good for productivity. Often, they also discourage creativity and curiosity as they are deemed day-dreaming and not working. What these businesses must realise is that creativity, a vivid imagination and curiosity are the very thing that make the business more productive, resolves problems and create new opportunities and possibilities. It also brings innovation and take the business to the forefront of the competition. What does your business do to encourage innovation and creativity?
Children’s imagination is always in overdrive, they dream up things, they are curious and they always find things to do… Many people think that being curious is rude… It can be. It can also be the path to new discoveries, new opportunities, new possibilities… Curiosity allows us to find ways to make what we imagine, what we dream a reality.
When we are children, we dream and our imagination goes wild. The more we dream, the more we imagine, the more possibilities and opportunities we find. The we grow up and we are told that dreaming and imagining things are for children, so we stop. Then, our world becomes very small, we seem to be stuck, we can’t find opportunities. Then, I wonder… How about dreaming and imagining a much better future? How about we start dreaming and imagining a way to go from where we are to where we want to go?
Our life is limited only by our imagination, by our dreams… People tend to forget to dream because it is not real, without realising that what we dream, what we imagine will create our reality. So, we can only go as far as we can imagine. What are your dreams? How far can you go with your imagination?
